Kevin’s academic pursuits lie at the intersection of teaching, practice, and community engagement, and he has worked with both urban and rural communities on a variety of community-oriented impact design projects. These include ongoing collaborations with the Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center, which partners student designers with community-based clients to develop conceptual designs for real-world application. In addition, his Professional Practice students are engaged in a multi-semester partnership with the City of Roanoke to bring design solutions to the traditionally underserved neighborhood of Melrose-Orange. Since August of 2017, he has served as faculty co-leader with the Virginia Tech Center for Design Research on a collaborative student-led project to design a new campus library for Mzuzu University (Mzuni) in Malawi, Africa.
Finally, it should be noted that Kevin can’t think straight without ‘moving the pen around’ on a 12” roll of trace paper – white, not yellow.
